Baseball – A European title that flies away – Semifinals: Montpellier dominates, Toulouse creates a sensation
While the French women’s team saw their dream of European supremacy fly away, last weekend shook up the home fields. The Division 1 semifinals lived up to all expectations: implacable logic in the South, thunderbolt in Toulouse.

Montpellier in control, La Rochelle without answers
Montpellier Barracudas – La Rochelle Boucaniers: 7-5, 3-2
On paper, the matchup looked lopsided. On the field, logic prevailed. Strong from their near-perfect regular season, the Barracudas didn’t flinch against the Boucaniers. Two wins, two games where the depth of the roster made the difference.
The bat spoke in decisive moments, and Montpellier’s bullpen, solid and consistent, managed to contain the rare Rochelle surges.
« We knew the bar was high, but we hoped to create a surprise, » confessed a Boucaniers player after the game. « Unfortunately, at this level, the slightest mistake costs dearly. »
And there were mistakes: a shaky relief outing from Canelon, inaccuracies on double plays, and above all, the ejection of Maxence Esteban in the second game, which literally clipped the wings of the Maritimes.
The Rochelais left frustrated but lucid, while Montpellier continues its path to another final, with the quiet confidence of a leader sure of its strength.

Toulouse topples Rouen mountain
Toulouse Tigers – Rouen Huskies: 2-0 in the series
This was the clash that set the weekend ablaze. At the Argoulets’ field, Toulouse took down the Rouen giant, multiple champion and heavy favorite of the competition. Two clean victories, snatched with courage and power.
The numbers speak for themselves: 11 hits in the first game, 8 in the second, against only 9 and 5 for the Huskies. The red and black bats roared, and the Norman defense cracked, conceding three errors on Saturday and two on Sunday.
« We didn’t let go, we played with heart. Nobody believed in us, but we knew we could do it, » let out, euphoric, the Toulouse coach.
However, beware: the series is far from over. Rouen remains formidable at home and has already proven it can turn around compromised situations. Toulouse will have to maintain its intensity and ferocity to snatch the decisive third victory, otherwise the dynamic could shift and everything could be replayed in a fifth decisive game.
The date is set: next weekend in Normandy, it’s going to be explosive.

Women’s baseball: the end of the French reign
On the European stage, the story was less joyful for the French. Double European champions a few years ago, the French women succumbed to the rise of the British, Czechs, and Dutch.
Less prepared, less structured, the tricolor team – composed mostly of players accustomed to softball – didn’t find the key. The final pitted Great Britain against the Czech Republic, and it was ultimately the English who prevailed, after a tense and spectacular game.
« Other nations invest more in baseball-specific preparation, » acknowledges a French team official. « If we want to return to the top, we’ll have to raise our level of demand. »
A Europe in full mutation
The landscape of European baseball is changing at high speed. Long dominated by the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain, the continent now sees new powers emerging. The British, European U23 men’s champions, confirm with a women’s title. The Czechs are also establishing themselves among the big guns.
In September, the senior men will enter the fray. Will the British confirm this dynamic? Will France know how to bounce back? One certainty: European baseball is undergoing a revolution, and it has only just begun.
