Division 1: Montpellier on the attack, Rouen in total control… what the numbers reveal with two matchdays remaining

With just two matchdays left in the French Division 1 championship, the collective statistics are starting to reveal their verdict. Batting average, runs scored, home runs, ERA, strikeouts and defensive quality: six key indicators that help measure the teams’ strengths ahead of the final sprint.

And one thing is clear: Montpellier and Rouen are dominating the statistical landscape, but in very different ways. The Barracudas are wowing with their offensive firepower, while the Huskies are showing remarkable mastery across nearly every facet of the game. Behind them, Béziers, Sénart, La Rochelle, Savigny and Toulouse each have their own well-defined strengths. Only the Paris Université Club, currently eighth, fails to appear on any of the six statistical podiums.

Montpellier: an attack like no other

If one team stands out offensively this season, the numbers leave no doubt: the Barracudas of Montpellier are in a league of their own.

With a collective batting average of .332, Montpellier leads the championship by a wide margin. Behind them, the Templiers of Sénart (.285) and the Lions of Savigny (.283) trail by a considerable gap—nearly fifty points separate Montpellier from its closest pursuers.

This hitting prowess naturally translates to the scoreboard. With 194 runs scored, Montpellier also boasts the best offense in Division 1. Rouen follows with 168 runs, while La Rochelle rounds out the podium with 152.

The two statistics tell the same story: Montpellier not only puts runners on base regularly, but it also brings them home. With two matchdays still to play, the Barracudas are clearly the offensive benchmark of the championship.

But their dominance doesn’t stop there. With 212 strikeouts recorded by their pitchers, they also sit second in that category, and their defensive percentage of .952 is the second-best in the league.

In short, reducing Montpellier to just its offensive firepower would be a mistake: the Barracudas present a far more complete profile.

Rouen: the power of balance

While Montpellier hits harder than anyone else, Rouen impresses with its extraordinary consistency across every facet of the game.

The Huskies lead three of the six statistics presented.

Starting with home runs, where they top the charts with 10. The lead is slim, however, as three teams follow closely with 8 home runs: Savigny, Sénart and Toulouse.

Rouen’s true strength, however, lies on the mound. With a collective ERA of 2.97, the Huskies are the only team to dip below the symbolic three-run mark per nine innings. Savigny follows at 3.38, ahead of Sénart at 3.55.

Such an ERA reflects Rouen’s ability to control games and limit scoring opportunities for opposing offenses.

And when the ball is put in play, Rouen remains just as solid. The Huskies boast the best defensive percentage in the league at .963, ahead of Montpellier (.952) and Béziers (.950).

Add in their 168 runs—second-best in Division 1—and the picture becomes clear: Rouen may not dominate offensively like Montpellier, but it may well present the most balanced statistical profile in the championship.

Savigny: the Lions make their arms heard

In one category, no team does it better than the Lions of Savigny: strikeouts.

With 238 strikeouts, their pitching staff leads Division 1 by a wide margin. Montpellier follows at 212, Toulouse at 211.

The Lions hold a 26-strikeout lead over Montpellier and 27 over Toulouse—a significant gap that reflects their pitchers’ ability to retire batters directly, without needing to rely on their defense.

This dominance isn’t just quantitative. With an ERA of 3.38—second-best in the league behind Rouen—Savigny confirms the overall quality of its pitching staff.

The Lions’ profile is clear: their main asset lies on the mound. In tight late-season matchups, this ability to prevent opponents from putting the ball in play could prove particularly valuable.

Sénart: present everywhere without dominating

The Templiers of Sénart also present an interesting profile.

They boast the second-best batting average at .285, just ahead of Savigny (.283). With 8 home runs, they also sit in the chasing pack behind Rouen in the power department.

But Sénart also shines on the mound: its 3.55 ERA ranks as the third-best in the championship.

The Templiers don’t lead any of the six statistics, but their presence in multiple categories illustrates a certain level of consistency. A team capable of hitting, generating power and relying on strong pitching. They have the tools to chase down fourth place—more so than the La Rochelle Buccaneers, at least from a statistical standpoint.

La Rochelle: runs and solid defense

For the Buccaneers of La Rochelle, two figures stand out.

With 152 runs, La Rochelle boasts the third-best offensive production in the league behind Montpellier and Rouen. But that’s where their statistical strengths end. Whether it will be enough to secure a playoff spot remains to be seen—especially with their final two matchups against Toulouse looming large.

Toulouse: plenty of strikeouts… and power

The Tigers of Toulouse shine in two particularly eye-catching areas.

With 211 strikeouts, they rank third in the league, just one behind Montpellier. Toulouse boasts a pitching staff capable of generating plenty of swings and misses and direct outs.

The Tigers also tally 8 home runs, tying with Sénart and La Rochelle behind Rouen.

Two statistics that paint a picture of a team capable of swinging a game quickly—whether through its pitchers on one side or its power batters on the other.

Two profiles stand out ahead of the final sprint

Reading through these six statistics, two teams clearly rise above the rest.

Montpellier undeniably possesses the most potent offense. The Barracudas lead both in batting average (.332) and runs scored (194), while also ranking in the Top 3 for strikeouts and defensive quality.

Rouen, meanwhile, appears to present the most complete profile. First in home runs (10), ERA (2.97) and defense (.963), second in runs (168), the Normandy side boasts strengths across virtually every facet of the game.

And then there’s the PUC. Currently eighth, Paris is the only one of the eight Division 1 teams to miss the podium in all six statistical categories. A telling sign of the struggles the Paris-region side has faced this season.
