Zach Schonbrun’s book helps us understand the role of our brain in all our actions, decisions, and movements.
Through numerous scientific studies, interviews, and real-life cases featuring famous athletes (Michael Jordan, Tom Brady…), this book aids in understanding performance through neuroscience. While it doesn’t provide the keys to success as such, it clearly explains that the next trend in sports training lies in analyzing cognitive and psychological data.
In this work, he often uses baseball as an example, highlighting its unique aspects such as decision-making at the plate and the visual evaluation of the ball’s trajectory. For instance, according to studies by DeCervo highlighted in the book, about 200 milliseconds separate the detection of a visual impulse from the muscular reaction. Given that a fastball pitched at 152 km/h takes around 400 milliseconds to reach home plate, studies show that when pros take their swing, it’s more of a prediction than a reaction!

Schonbrun reveals numerous fascinating explanations on topics such as neuroplasticity, the science of movement and biomechanics, and advancements in neurotechnologies.
Easy to read and well-documented, Sport and Neuroscience is recommended to anyone who wants to understand their own functioning and thus be able to act on it in their quest for performance.
