Weekend results: championships take shape as playoffs loom

Championships deliver first verdicts

The leagues are hurtling toward the finish line, and as the sprint heats up, the first verdicts are starting to roll in. In Division 2 Baseball, the finalists are now known. In Division 1 Baseball, the four semifinalists have also been identified. In Women’s Division 1 Softball, the final four is also set, though a handful of matches remain to officially close out the regular season.

As for the Men’s European Softball Cup, we’ll only provide a quick recap today. The continental competition deserves a deeper dive in a future article.

On to the weekend’s results.

Division 1 Baseball: Savigny rules the roost

It took the final matchday of the regular season to crown a champion—and the Lions de Savigny made sure they finished on top.

Facing the Barracudas de Montpellier, Savigny left little to chance. The opening game started evenly enough, but the Île-de-France side gradually seized control. In the third and fourth innings, the Paris-region hitters went on the offensive, plating six runs and seizing both a lead and the psychological edge. The sixth inning proved fatal for Montpellier, as eleven runs crossed the plate in a single at-bat, triggering the mercy rule. A harsh outcome that few would have predicted before first pitch.

The second game looked set for a different script. Until the seventh inning, Montpellier held firm and even clung to a virtual third-place finish. But Savigny’s bats had other plans. In the eighth, the Lions flipped the script and sealed a second straight win.

Two victories that propelled Savigny to the top of the standings alone. Meanwhile, Montpellier’s two losses cost the Barracudas dearly, as they limped to a fourth-place finish.

Rouen finishes second, Buccaneers lurking

The Huskies de Rouen had one clear mission: sweep Sénart and hope Savigny faltered to snatch the title. The Rouennais delivered. Two convincing wins, both secured before the mercy rule limit, as the Templiers clearly lacked the firepower to push deep into the championship. But Savigny didn’t blink.

Rouen finishes in second place and will face La Rochelle in the semifinals. Montpellier rounds out the top four—and will again square off against the champions from Savigny.

Toulouse and PUC split the spoils

In the other weekend clash, Toulouse and the PUC (Paris Université Club) went toe-to-toe in a full-blooded battle. The two sides split the series, each taking one win apiece. For Toulouse, the season ends here. For the PUC, their Division 1 journey ends in disappointment—the Parisian club will be relegated and replaced next season by a Division 2 side, either Montigny or Metz.

Semifinals to feature new format

The final four is now set. And this year, the semifinals will be played as a best-of-three series, a departure from previous seasons when they were best-of-five.

The matchups are locked in:

• Savigny vs. Montpellier
• Rouen vs. La Rochelle

Kickoff for the semifinals is set for September 12 and 13.

Division 2 Baseball: Montigny and Metz set up final showdown

The Division 2 semifinals have spoken—and two teams made emphatic statements to book their spots in the final.

Montigny wasted no time against Nice. The Montigniens stormed to two straight wins with authority, quickly punching their ticket to the championship decider.

Over in the other semifinal, the Cometz de Metz faced a far tougher test. The first game against Meyzieu was a nail-biter, with the Messins barely hanging on as their opponents rallied late. But the second game was a different story. Metz’s offensive firepower finally clicked, and the Cometz secured their place in the final.

The championship showdown will pit two former Division 1 sides against each other. A clash that promises fireworks between two teams already familiar with the demands of top-flight national competition.

The final will be a best-of-five series, played on September 13, 19, and 20, with additional games if needed. Both teams share the same goal: return to Division 1.

Women’s Division 1 Softball: final four locked in

The Comanches didn’t so much as flinch.

Against Nice, they delivered two more dominant wins to close the regular season with a simply staggering record: 19 wins and zero losses. A total masterclass that cements the Comanches as undisputed champions. A welcome morale boost after their disappointment on the European stage just days earlier.

Behind them, the tight race between Pessac and Évry plays right into the Pharaonnes’ hands. The Paris side now knows they’ll face the Panthers de Pessac in the semifinals, no matter the outcome of the remaining matches.

Grenoble secures fourth place

The Grizzlys de Grenoble made sure of their spot. A pair of wins over Colombes sealed their fourth-place finish.

The first game was a real scrap, with Colombes keeping the pressure on deep into the contest. But Grenoble found a way to edge them out before putting the exclamation mark on their dominance in the second game.

A handful of matches remain to officially close the regular season: two between Évry and Grenoble and one between Saint-Raphaël and Colombes. But these games won’t shake up the standings—the final four is already set. The Saint-Raphaël vs. Colombes clash, however, could still impact the lower reaches of the table.

The semifinal matchups are locked in:

• Saint-Raphaël vs. Grenoble
• Pessac vs. Évry

Men’s European Softball Cup: a step too high

On the men’s European Softball Cup stage, the French showing was far less impressive.

Nice and Évry failed to register a single win. Both clubs bowed out with identical records: four losses in pool play, followed by two more defeats in the classification matches.

The verdict is clear: the European level remains a world apart from the domestic championship. This campaign served as a stark reminder of the gap French softball still needs to bridge to compete with the continent’s elite.
