Weekend Roundup: Weather Wreaks Havoc on Baseball Schedule

Unsettled weather disrupts matchday plans

Stormy conditions across northern France threw a wrench into the weekend baseball schedule, forcing several games to be postponed and reshuffling the lineup.

Division 1 Baseball: La Rochelle makes a splash against Béziers

The only doubleheader to go ahead saw La Rochelle face off against Béziers. The Buccaneers made the most of this opportunity, securing two wins that propelled them to the top of the standings.

The first game was a nail-biter. Béziers struck first, scoring two runs in the third inning. The Rochelais struggled to respond until the eighth inning, when they finally tied the game. The decisive moment came in extra innings: in the tenth, Camara delivered a game-winning RBI for La Rochelle.

The second match followed a similar script. La Rochelle quickly scored two runs, only to see Béziers take the lead with three runs in the fourth inning. However, the Maritimes turned the tables, pulling ahead with five runs in the fifth inning.

With this double defeat, Béziers has given the PUC renewed hope in their fight for survival.

Division 2 Baseball: Metz dominates, Nice stumbles

Two matches pitted Metz against Valenciennes. The Northern Vipers were completely outclassed by the Cometz, who secured two convincing victories.

The lopsided scores reflect the season’s trends. Valenciennes seems to have underwhelmed, while Metz is eyeing a potential return to Division 1.

Meanwhile, Nice was held to a draw by Clermont in their second match. The league leaders maintain their top spot in the standings but have now completed their regular season.

Metz, lying in wait, will have a chance to catch up to Nice at the top when they face Ermont in their next doubleheader. Two wins would allow the Cometz to share the top spot by the end of the regular season.

The Expos d’Ermont will also have a lot to play for. They need at least one win to catch up with Valenciennes and Montpellier in the lower reaches of the table.

French Women’s Baseball Open: Hauts-de-France shine on the field, controversy off it

The Hauts-de-France League made a perfect run, sweeping their three matches against Île-de-France, Grand Ouest Parisien, and Normandy.

But the competition has also garnered unprecedented media attention — and not necessarily the kind they wanted.

Just over a month ago, the president of the French Baseball Federation announced the dissolution of the French women’s national team. A decision that sparked strong emotions within the community, given the symbolic importance of this squad and its impressive record, including two European championships.

Since then, actions have spoken louder than words. French baseball regularly seeks the spotlight of national media — and unfortunately, it will be the end of the women’s national team that steals the show.

L’Équipe, Le Monde, Sud Ouest, and Ouest-France have already picked up the story, and the list could grow. Media attention the French baseball community could have done without.

U12 European Championship: French youngsters finish seventh

In Évry, the U12 European Championship was also disrupted by the heatwave.

The young French team finished seventh out of eight teams, with a record of one win and three losses.

Germany, the Czech Republic, and Italy rounded out the podium.

The U12s will now hand over the baton to the U18s, who are gearing up for their own European Championship.
