The first edition of the French Women’s Open wrapped up this Easter weekend. Over 75 women battled it out for victory on the grand baseball field in Valenciennes.
On the sporting side, it was the Normandy side that won all four of their pool-stage matches and claimed the title by defeating the Hauts-de-France team in the final. Unfortunately, the English side, ‘Les Belles,’ lost all of their matches.
Spectators, French national team selectors (this was the perfect opportunity to scout players for the European Championship, which will take place in Montpellier from August 3rd to 6th), and viewers all gathered for a true celebration of baseball.

Kudos to Vipères TV and its two commentators, Gaetan Alibert and Axelle Palma, who broadcast all the matches, which you can now watch on replay on their YouTube channel.
After watching a Division 1 men’s match or an MLB game, you’ll notice a stark contrast in the level of play. Yes, when it comes to pitching, but then there’s the hitting, base running, relays, double plays, and fly outs. It’s all the same, and the players dive, run, and relay quickly to the bases or home plate. Pitcher development is the key to winning matches.

If the first French national team had won the French championship, they would have earned their spot in the World Cup. Unfortunately, COVID-19 wiped out that opportunity, and they’ll have to start over by winning the European Cup to qualify for the World Cup again. This will be the time to bring back players from across the Atlantic, starting with the first of them, Melissa Mayeux, who, according to her commitments, will be in Montpellier in August.
