Final D1 Matchday Round-Up: The Playoff Picture Takes Shape

The French championship has delivered its verdict on the semi-final line-up. We’re now entering the stretch of the season where the men are separated from the boys.

First place goes to the Lions de Savigny, who haven’t held the top spot since 2010 in an eight-team league. Savigny made the most of the Barracudas’ weakened state to confirm their season-long dominance. It’s a reward for their consistency—losing just once in back-to-back games—and their explosive offense, which features a top line-up of Nunez, Acuna, and the Amoros brothers. Pena, despite a few walks, remains the season’s best pitcher, while Orozco continues to master the art of closing games. Not everything is perfect, but Savigny has earned this top spot with true grit, boasting the best record (17-0) when leading after six innings and the most wins coming from behind.

Can the Lions be crowned champions? Absolutely—they’re first, they’ll have home-field advantage, and they’ve turned Chartres into a fortress (12-2). But they’ll feel the hot breath of the Huskies de Rouen on their necks. The Normans have hit the gas late in the season, rattling off seven straight wins, including four mercy-rule victories, 71 runs scored, and just 12 allowed. Their offense has been relentless (.335 batting average), drawing 50 walks and smashing eight home runs. If their attack keeps firing—Bondel has driven in 13 runs in those seven games—it’ll be the pitching that gives opponents nightmares. The “Fab Four” of Ito, Mercadier, Prioul, and Taido have been nearly unhittable, posting a 2.55 ERA and striking out 65 in 53 innings.

The Templiers de Sénart pushed back twice early, but the Rouen offense was too much. Vera, despite a stellar finish to his season, couldn’t contain the Huskies’ onslaught. It’s staggering to note that the Sénart hurler has posted a 10.12 ERA against Rouen this year, compared to a sparkling 1.72 against every other team.

Montpellier’s late-season collapse is undeniable, with four straight losses plummeting them to 4th place. The Barracudas suffered another mercy-rule defeat—their fifth of the year—this time a 2-13 drubbing in La Rochelle that handed the Boucaniers the 3rd spot and a date with Rouen. While La Rochelle has a knack for ruffling Rouen’s feathers, Montpellier can’t excuse their struggles with injuries (Zan, Pontiac, Lesfargues, Ramirez, plus Bouniol and Couvreur already gone). Allowing 18 runs to a direct rival for the title is a stain on their season. It’s their eighth outing this year surrendering double digits, worse than any team except PUC. Sure, Montpellier’s offense is fearsome, but their 17.2% walk rate—the league’s worst—and a defense that’s wobbled at times (though slightly improved over the last six games) reveal gaping holes.

The final match of the day saw PUC notch their second straight win with a fully French line-up, including their first walk-off of the season. Toulouse, also shorthanded, salvaged a draw in a late-game rally. Little else to take from this clash, except perhaps a fond farewell to the Paris side, who never quite found their rhythm in D1.
