Facing the officiating crisis in France, the National Arbitration Commission of the French Baseball Federation, led by Ludovic Mellier, has decided to take bold action: a completely revamped, dynamic, and informative bimonthly magazine, « Côté Marbre ». Out with the simple layout, in with a genuine snapshot of the tricolor officiating corps, enriched with graphics, maps, and inspiring portraits.

From the very first pages, the situation is clear and to the point: « Calling crisis », « Field realities ». Officiating is desperately short of new recruits. A problem explained by several factors: the general decline in volunteering, clubs and leagues struggling to organize training, exams deemed too difficult, and an increasingly vocal questioning of officiating decisions, even at the highest level.
But rather than lamenting, the federation has decided to take action. This digital magazine aims to spark interest, make information more accessible, and, above all, inspire people to embrace the role of an official. Because the numbers are concerning: with barely a thousand active officials, double officiating remains a luxury in far too many games. A map of the situation reveals regional disparities and a fairly balanced distribution between baseball and softball, in line with the demographics of licensed players.

Inspiring Portraits, Young People Stepping Up
Throughout the pages, two portraits of officials, Stéphan(e) Girault and Laroque, perfectly illustrate what this often thankless but passionate mission can offer. Yes, officiating means facing criticism, anger, and inevitable mistakes. But it’s also about experiencing emotional moments, being at the heart of the game, and seeing baseball from a different angle.
A focus on the Normandy region even gives young officials in training a platform. Their words are telling: « fascinating », « not boring », « useful for playing better ». Proof that the next generation is ready, provided they are given the means and the motivation to get involved.

Training, Structuring, Passing on Knowledge: The Regions’ Challenge
For Ludovic Mellier and his team, the key to renewal lies in stronger regional engagement. Regular and accessible training is the lifeblood of the game, and this magazine aims to become an essential relay. Tutorials, rule explanations, interactive games… everything is designed to offer both technical and engaging content.
The ambition is clear: to make officiating a genuine choice, no longer imposed but desired. A well-placed first pitch in the revival of officiating in France. Now it’s time to follow through on the field!
