Since pitchers’ movements affect batters’ swings and misses, the search for the ball grip and arm position has been constantly evolving. While this search is generally progressive, it can also lead to non-academic inventions, often driven by bad faith and outright cheating. Baseball history is filled with pitchers caught using various materials on their hands or fingers just before pitching a strike. From their necks, caps, belts, necklaces, even their hair— the inventions have been countless.
