⚾ Division 1 – The semifinals promise to be electric
Four teams, two matchups, one certainty: this weekend, French baseball will come alive.
At the top of the bill, the two expected giants – Montpellier and Rouen – have dominated the regular season and naturally find themselves in the final four. Facing them, two unexpected guests: Toulouse and La Rochelle, who have held their own against Savigny and Sénart to secure their spot.
This Saturday and Sunday, the stage is set for the first two acts of a best-of-five series. The dice are cast: La Rochelle hosts Montpellier, while Toulouse takes on Rouen at home.

Lessons from the past
History vs. freshness: that’s the duel within the duel. On paper, Montpellier and Rouen’s experience and tactical prowess carry weight. These teams know how to handle the pressure of a long series, manage their pitching staff, and keep their cool. Their track records speak for themselves, unlike their challengers.
Conversely, few players from La Rochelle and Toulouse have tasted the adrenaline of do-or-die games. The psychological edge is clear: the giants know how to overcome this type of hurdle.

Regular season stats
The numbers don’t lie: Montpellier dominates on almost every front. On offense and defense, the Hérault franchise boasts an impressive lineup: Flores, Brossier, and Kovacs are among the top five in the league in batting average, RBIs, hits, and runs. On the mound, Vera and Ozanich lock it down.
Rouen isn’t far behind: Dagneau hits hard (home runs), Harrison brings the power (RBIs), and Brainville embodies consistency at the plate.
La Rochelle can rely on Franklin de la Rosa (pitching) and Pena (RBIs), while Toulouse counts on Mendoza (doubles) and Rojas to keep the offense running.

Key absences
The end of the season isn’t just about the field, but also about departures. Several young talents have already left for the United States.
La Rochelle loses Mathéo Pierre (5 HR) and Esteban Briones, two explosive bats. Montpellier will be without Ben Couvreur, a pillar of their pitching staff. Toulouse sees Arthur Saumande and Théo Garcia depart. Rouen, less impacted, will still have to do without Bellina, a valuable player throughout the season, and Esposito will also leave for the USA if they reach the final. These absences will also affect the team composition, as these are JFL players who are leaving, and the JFL presence rule on the field must still be respected. In this regard, Toulouse and La Rochelle are the least fortunate.
Moreover, La Rochelle’s coach (Pablo Ossandon) will be traveling with the French Women’s Baseball team in the Czech Republic and will only be able to assist a trio of coaches on the field (Nieves, Esteban, and Canellon) remotely.
Home-field advantage
Having home-field advantage for the last three potential games is a masterstroke. Montpellier and Rouen will. The underdogs will therefore need to strike hard this weekend: two wins to start would be a dream, one win would be enough to stay in the game.
La Rochelle has a small precedent: they already surprised Montpellier at home earlier in the season. Toulouse, on the other hand, hasn’t yet found the key against Rouen. But August isn’t May: rosters have changed, the cards have been reshuffled.

When PR gets involved
Even off the field, the battle is fierce. The four clubs have injected a touch of creativity – and sometimes artificial intelligence – into their match visuals. Toulouse dares to wink at cinema, Montpellier allows itself some originality, Rouen remains solid in its regularity, and La Rochelle plays it safe.
Some see this as a detail. Others, as an extra boost that galvanizes fans and players.
And now… let’s play ball
For the spectacle, we hope for surprises: two underdogs victorious, and the promise of a second scorching weekend. But objectively, logic points to a split: one win apiece, and the tension intact for the rest.
However, if Rouen or Montpellier leave with a 2-0, the story could be over before the final whistle.
This weekend, there will be more than just balls and hits. There will be rhythm, strategy, high-stakes gambles… and maybe a legend in the making.
