This second weekend of Division 1 Baseball delivered on all fronts! We expected a general split of points among the eight teams… and we weren’t far off! Six teams neutralized each other with a win apiece, but it was La Rochelle who defied expectations by sweeping Savigny, throwing the Lions into turmoil.

Meanwhile, four teams have pulled ahead with 3 or 4 victories under their belts: La Rochelle, Sénart, Rouen, and Toulouse, off to a flying start in this championship.

🔵 Yvan Acuna (Savigny) – Mental game at the heart of the challenge

Disappointed but clear-eyed, Savigny’s coach delivers a blunt assessment after a rocky start to the season:

“We’ve got a lot of work to do. We need to get back into a routine and focus on the mental side of the game. I’m disappointed, but that’s not my job. My role is to prepare the team as best as possible.”

Despite two losses to La Rochelle, Acuna remains combative:

“The fight is there. The attitude is there. The desire is there. Now, we all need to motivate each other if we want to succeed.”

⚪ Pablo Ossandon (La Rochelle) – Two wins, but room for improvement

Two victories to his name, including one snatched in dramatic fashion, but Pablo Ossandon keeps his feet on the ground:

“Yesterday, we hit well. Today, not so much. And above all, we made a lot of defensive errors. From that perspective, it was our worst game of the season.”

Satisfied with his team’s offensive potential, he identifies an area for improvement:

“We’ve got a team that hits, so we really need to work on our defense and its routine. We’re off to as strong a start as last year, but this time with an extra pitcher (Wilce Nieves). I’m confident for the rest of the season.”

🟠 David Ten Eyck (Metz) – A frustrating but hopeful start

Despite a winless start to the season, Metz’s manager remains optimistic:

“We started with two tough away games. We completely missed the mark in the first match against Montpellier, but the next three were decided by just four runs combined. It’s frustrating, of course, but we’ll work hard to turn things around.”

He concludes with confidence:

“I believe in this team. If everyone believes and commits as they should, we’ll bounce back quickly.”

🟡 Olivier Brossier & Tim Smith (Montpellier) – A team on the rise

The Montpellier duo is pleased with an encouraging weekend:

“After a tricky first weekend, especially defensively, we managed to get the machine running. The first match was solid on both sides of the game.”

But it was the second match against Metz that truly showcased the team’s character:

“Against a promising team, we had to dig deep to hold on. It was a real battle, but we’re happy with the result and ready for what’s next.”

🟠 Quentin Becquey (Rouen) – A lack of clutch execution.

“A very close first game, we lacked the clutch factor and execution. Indeed, we left 12 runners on base, including a bases-loaded, no-out situation in the top of the 4th inning. We ended up losing this game in the 10th inning despite a great effort from the pitching staff.
I would have been more worried if we hadn’t had any scoring opportunities, but that’s not the case. The players know that to win, you have to execute. This weekend shows that, despite the opposition, we always manage to create opportunities to take the lead.”

🔵 Yanael Delphech (Toulouse) – Even without reinforcements, we’re already strong.

“Great start despite winter difficulties and 4 regulars absent over the first 2 matchdays, against heavily reinforced teams (6 or 7 imports each I think). We showed some great things, a united group with a very young core (31 years old combined 😳) and effective teamwork.
We also showed our weaknesses with the possibility of the whole structure collapsing in a few minutes. We can work on that, we know that our lack of consistency has been our weakness in recent seasons but we are optimistic because we did what was necessary this winter to address this”
