If there was one word to sum up the start of the Challenge de France, it would be this: incongruous. Nothing went as planned. The favorites fell, the underdogs shone, and improbable scenarios unfolded. A quick look back at a completely thrilling weekend.

Savigny and Metz Steal the Show

The first two teams to qualify? Not Rouen. Not Montpellier. But Savigny and Metz, who had been struggling in the league. Seizing their chances, focused, and composed, they perfectly navigated their matchups with surprising mastery.

Mercy Rule Galore

Four of the eight games ended under the mercy rule, before even completing the five required innings. A direct consequence of the JFL’s seven-inning rule and the strategic management of bullpens over multiple days. Each manager had to walk a tightrope… at the risk of tipping their own team.

Rouen and Montpellier on the Ropes (Almost)

Montpellier and Rouen, the two top teams in the standings, had to go through the playoff round. And surprise: only Montpellier pulled through. Rouen fell. Twice. Against Béziers. A shock. A seismic one, given how the Huskies seemed poised to go far.

Toulouse and La Rochelle: Quick Exit

Another disappointment: Toulouse and La Rochelle left empty-handed after two decisive defeats. No debate possible on the field, the results spoke for themselves.

Sénart Runs Out of Steam

Lacking depth in the pitching rotation, Sénart crumbled against Montpellier in a tightly contested match. The Barracudas, led by their closer Yolann Quinonez, finished in style with a masterful strikeout.

The pinnacle of strangeness was this epic Rouen vs. Béziers showdown. Tied until the seventh inning, Esteban Prioul’s injury, a controversial ejection by the umpires… and in extra innings, Béziers walked off after Quentin Becquey mishandled an intentional walk. The D1 underdog secured a prestigious victory.

This weekend proved it beyond a doubt. Now it’s time for the semifinals: Montpellier vs. Metz, a rematch of the 2024 final, and Savigny vs. Béziers, a clash between confirmation and surprise. Hard to make predictions when the teams seem so evenly matched… and the bullpens already stretched thin.
