Spring is in the air as May arrives with its long weekends. Baseball and softball take center stage this weekend.
Baseball Division 1
4th matchday. Two leaders: La Rochelle and Toulouse, and two cellar dwellers: Sénart and Montigny. We analyze the upcoming matchups, with team presidents and coaches also reflecting on last weekend’s action.

The two leaders, La Rochelle and Toulouse, face off at the Argoulets in Toulouse. This is a true test that will give us a real sense of where this championship stands. Expect a high-level game. Both teams have already shown their strengths. La Rochelle has lost just once, perhaps due to overconfidence. They dominated Rouen, while Toulouse split with them, giving La Rochelle a slight edge. But Toulouse has home-field advantage.
Yanael Delpech, Toulouse President: Our first match was tough defensively. Against a team like Rouen, defensive mistakes don’t get forgiven. We bounced back on Sunday with a strong all-around performance. This confirms our solid start to the season, thanks to effective recruitment and preparation. Our showdown this weekend against leaders La Rochelle will give us a better sense of our competition in this league.
Pablo Ossandon for La Rochelle: Metz capitalized on our too many errors in the cold and wind. Now it’s our turn to react and prove our spot at the top isn’t a fluke by going to Toulouse and coming out on top.
Editor’s prediction: Split decision between the two teams

Montpellier travels to Rouen. The Huskies, playing at home, will be eager to show the 2023 French champions who rules their brand-new stadium. The Barracudas, already on edge early in the season, have faced another hurdle with a string of pitcher injuries.
Owen Ozanick for Montpellier: We’re most concerned about the injuries to three key players: Couvreur, Pontiac, and Sugiura. We hope to have Pontiac back this summer. Our hitters have come to life today, which is a good sign. Kevin Canelon pitched a strong game that let us get ahead and build confidence.
Quentin Becquey for Rouen: The pack was determined to capitalize on the batting work we did all week. We learned from our match 2 loss to La Rochelle (L 1-2) with 5 hits / 2 BB / 10 K and, crucially, 4 defensive errors while our pitching staff gave up 0 earned runs. A collective effort of 19 hits / 11 BB / 5 SO in 7 innings sealed our victory in match 1 (W 19-4). Whether it was the veterans or the young guns, the attitude and focus at the plate were exemplary. As for match 2 (L 4-5), we fell back into our defensive slump. The 6 defensive errors hurt us, while the pitchers only gave up 2 earned runs. Once again, I’ll say it: our worst enemy is ourselves. The only match we’ve lost so far is match 1 against La Rochelle (3 earned runs and 1 error, L 0-4). The other losses are on us. Alongside our defensive performance, I want to highlight this alarming stat: 42. That’s the number of defensive errors this weekend across 8 D1 matches. We’re responsible for 16% of that, but for a first division, it’s concerning to see that number rise: April 7 weekend: 8 matches (22 errors). April 14 weekend: 6 matches (23 errors). April 20 weekend: 8 matches (42 errors). Total: 22 matches (87 errors). We need to lock down our defense quickly before things get worse. Changes will be made this week to approach the Rouen-Montpellier weekend with confidence. We’re not far from consistent performances. We hold the best cards; we just need to play them right!
Editor’s prediction: Two wins for Rouen

Sénart hosts Montigny. Battle of the bottom dwellers. Sénart secured their first win against Montpellier last week. The Cougars need a confidence boost and will be giving it their all to get back on track.
Dylan Mayeux for Montigny: Things still didn’t click for us this weekend, unfortunately. Some injuries and absences of our starters have weakened the team, but we’re keeping our chins up and hoping to bounce back next weekend against Sénart.
Julien Brelle Andrade for Sénart: A crucial first win on Saturday with JFL starting. We could’ve avoided a tense finish by taking the lead in the 6th inning. Our base running shows we still have work to do. The second match was tougher against Canelon, who put us in tough spots. Both matches this weekend will be crucial against direct rival Montigny, who we’ll need to hold off in the standings.
Editor’s prediction: Split decision between the two teams

Savigny hosts Metz. The Lions are firing on all cylinders, led by their powerhouse: Ivan Acuna, who as both coach and player is dominating the batting stats. Metz has gained confidence by beating Montpellier once and La Rochelle once; they’re capable of putting up a fight. However, Savigny is truly in top form this year.
Shane Priest for Metz: We bounced back in the second match and showed we can beat anyone. Our team is tightly knit, and every player contributed to that win. It was a good weekend, but we know there’s still plenty of work to reach the playoffs. We believe we’re more than capable of getting there.
For the Lions, Ivan Acuna: Teamwork continues to show in our matches. Still some things to work on, but many positives. Our pitchers keep putting us in a good position to win.
Editor’s prediction: Two wins for Savigny
Broadcasts
- Huskies TV will broadcast both matches against Montpellier. Note: one match on Saturday at 5 PM and the other on Sunday at 11 AM
- Templiers TV will broadcast, hopefully with fewer network issues, both Sunday matches against Montigny at 11 AM and 2 PM
Baseball Division 2

Reserve matchday.
Two matchups in Pool A: Thiais hosts Sénart and La Guerche hosts Valenciennes. These clashes shouldn’t change the standings. Valenciennes, dominant this year, should logically return with two wins, cementing their lead in Pool A. Sénart and Thiais are locked in a tight battle at the bottom and should likely split, keeping their spots.
Softball Division 1 Women

4th matchday as well, following a big Super League weekend (Editor’s note: we’ll dedicate next week’s issue to a recap of that competition).
- Nice hosts Evry
- Clapiers travels to Grenoble
- Pessac welcomes Saint Raphael
At this stage, this 4th matchday could either widen the gap in favor of the Comanches, who are currently leading, and further bury the cellar dweller Nice, or it could tighten the standings with more split decisions, adding more suspense for future matchups.
