Makeup Day 8 D2: Recap of a Short Weekend
While the scorching heat forced the league to postpone most of the Division 2 matchday games, which were already makeup games for matches postponed during the last heatwave, the two series that survived the heatwave delivered intense action.

Valenciennes Vipères vs Metz Cometz
This series looked lopsided on paper, but the reality on the field surpassed the most pessimistic predictions for the Northerners. The Cometz, in the thick of the race for first place, showed absolute ruthlessness against Vipères, who were completely melted by the heat and the stakes.
GAME 1 (VAL 0 – 16 MET)
From the very first match, the suspense was killed off by a clinically efficient Messin attack. The Cometz recorded 12 hits and crossed the plate 16 times, inflicting a humiliating shutout on their hosts. On the Northern mound, Corentin Zegota’s ordeal crystallized his team’s woes: in just 3.0 innings, he allowed 11 runs (4 earned) and issued 5 walks, logically taking the loss. Valenciennes’ defense didn’t help with 2 errors, but it was mainly the interstellar void in their offense that stands out: the entire team managed only 2 measly hits for the whole game.
On the other side, Metz managed their lineup masterfully. Arthur Ten Eyck feasted in the batter’s box with 3 hits, 2 runs, and 3 RBI, while Basile Mallé let loose with 4 RBIs on a single hit. The Lorraine manager was able to save his arms, handing the win to reliever Silas Boussert, who was flawless with 4 strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
GAME 2 (VAL 2 – 20 MET)
If the first game was a nightmare for Valenciennes, the second turned into an outright massacre. Metz’s offense blew up the scoreboard with 20 runs on a whopping 19 hits. Analyzing this game forces us to focus on the tragic inning endured by Northern reliever Mathéo Prevost. Pushed to the limit in the heat, he went through a dark sequence: in just one short inning (1.0 IP), he gave up 13 hits and 14 runs (12 earned). It’s a total structural collapse of a pitching staff abandoned to its own devices, with starter Yugo Takatani already having allowed 6 runs (5 earned) earlier in the game.
For Metz, the steamroller showed no mercy. Simon Hansch (3 hits, 2 RBIs) and Corentin Maimbourg (2 hits, 3 runs) led the charge. On the mound, ace Jessel Abrahan Soto Arellano came in for a leisurely stroll in relief after 2.2 solid innings from Victor Cezzard (2H, 2R, 1ER, 2SO). In 2.1 innings, he struck out 6 batters without allowing a single run or walk, securing a victory with disconcerting ease.

Nice Cavigal vs Clermont-Ferrand Arvernes
If the previous series lacked suspense, the clash between the Nice juggernaut and the valiant Clermont side delivered on all fronts. This matchup gave us a remarkable individual performance, followed by a monumental comeback from the Auvergnats.
GAME 1 (NIC 3 – 1 CLF)
Words fail to describe what Danny Agustin Michel accomplished on the mound for Nice’s Cavigal. The pitcher delivered an absolute masterpiece, a performance that will go down in the 2026 D2 season’s history books. In 8.0 innings, he struck out an astonishing 20 batters. Twenty strikeouts out of the 24 outs he recorded in the game! He allowed only 2 hits and 1 earned run, suffocating the entire Auvergnat lineup on his own. Carried by Jonathan Montas’ 3 hits, Nice logically won, but the cruelty of baseball is embodied in the opposing pitcher’s stats.
Indeed, Clermont-Ferrand’s starter, Jeremy Blasiole, was exceptional. He pitched a complete game (8.0 innings), allowing 3 runs, but none of those runs were earned (0 ER). Despite his 9 strikeouts, he leaves with a loss that can be considered unfair, penalized by the game’s unpredictability against a Niçois pitcher in a state of grace.
GAME 2 (NIC 4 – 5 CLF)
How do you bounce back after being psychologically crushed by a 20 strikeout pitcher? That’s the question the Arvernes answered with immense heart the next day. Against the league leader, Clermont pulled off the unthinkable by winning in the nick of time. The recipe for the miracle is named Valentin Pujol. The Auvergnat starter showed remarkable resilience: in 7.0 innings, he cut the grass under the Niçois lineup, allowing only 4 runs, all unearned (0 ER), to secure a foundational win.
Clermont’s offense capitalized on their rare opportunities, like the 2 RBIs from second baseman and catcher Quentin Heidelberger, to take the lead. The Cavigal ultimately paid the price for their own inaccuracies, committing 2 fatal defensive errors. On the mound, Niçois Noah Enrione-Thorrand struck out 8 batters and allowed no earned runs in 4.0 innings of relief, but he took the loss in this game where defensive jitters cost his team the win. It was Caio Rainho Montero who came in to close the door for Clermont with a flawless save (1.0 IP, 2 SO), concluding this stunning upset.
STANDINGS ANALYSIS: The Race Tightens at the Top

Even with a schedule shortened by the heatwave, these four games had seismic repercussions on the Division 2 dynamics. The status quo is no longer an option, and the battle for the throne intensifies.
The unexpected fall of the Nice Cavigal in the second game against Clermont-Ferrand is the main lesson from this weekend. While the Azur coast armada remains at the top of their game, capable of relying on pitchers delivering historic performances, they showed an unusual defensive vulnerability. This flaw, even if minor, is a boon for their direct pursuers. Indeed, the Metz Cometz left no room for doubt in exploiting this stumble. By literally dismantling Valenciennes with terrifying firepower (36 runs scored in two games), the Lorrains sent a clear message: they are the number one threat to Nice and won’t let go until the playoffs.
In the second half of the table, the picture is cruelly divergent. On one hand, the Clermont-Ferrand Arvernes proved they have the mental toughness of great teams. Managing to snatch a win against the leader after being anesthetized the day before testifies to a united group, capable of impressive defensive resilience. This prestigious victory could well act as a psychological trigger for the rest of their season. At the opposite extreme, the Valenciennes Vipères seem to have definitively sunk into the abyss. The absolute shipwreck of their pitching staff, forced to concede innings with 14 runs, reveals a deep crisis and total wear and tear of the arms. Stuck in the league’s basement, the Northerners will have to quickly find internal solutions to stem the bleeding or risk a nightmarish end to their season.
