The Savigny Lions Roar Again: 20 Years Later, They Claim the French Challenge
It was a roar not heard in two decades. In May 2025, the Savigny Lions finally ended a 20-year drought by winning the French Challenge title, following an impressive and unexpected journey.

4 games, 4 wins. Two by mercy rule in the knockout stages, a historic no-hitter in the semifinals, and a final won with ice in their veins, capitalizing on every key moment and opponent’s weakness. This victorious campaign was a model of efficiency in the short seven-inning format, which undoubtedly played in Savigny’s favor this year. Because in nine-inning games, the outcome might have been very different.

The team, bottom of the Division 1 standings, transformed into a winning machine during this tournament. Underdogs turned into champions. Leading the charge: Evertz Orozco, unanimous MVP, who delivered a masterful no-hitter in his seventh season in D1. A performance that rewards an exemplary career and, in passing, gives the Lions a well-deserved trophy.

A title, a strong signal for the club’s management, who hope this victory will finally give the necessary weight to their new field project, demanded for nearly ten years. Such success can only catch the attention of local decision-makers: it’s time to give the Lions a stage worthy of their ambitions.
What a tough pill for Metz!
For Metz, the pill is harder to swallow. Runners-up for the second consecutive year, the Cometz hoped to make it count after an acceptable defeat in 2024. This time, the bitterness is real, especially as they played at home in front of their fans. The turning point of the game? A decisive fifth inning where Edward Paredès of Metz showed signs of fatigue. His coach, Yeixon Ruiz, took the mound but decided to let him face Yvan Acuna, the opposing coach… and a feared slugger, undoubtedly one of the best hitters in Division 1 for several seasons. Result? The clutch moment eluded the Cometz. Some will replay the game, thinking that a pitcher change or an intentional walk might have changed the course of the game… But baseball doesn’t like regrets.

The Other Teams: Powerhouses Struggling, a Cinderella Story Shining
All eyes are on Savigny, the surprise champion of this 2025 French Challenge. But behind this beautiful story, other narratives have unfolded—often in muted tones, sometimes behind the scenes, and for some, in deafening silence.

Toulouse and La Rochelle? True to a sad habit. Once again, both teams fell short. The Challenge clearly isn’t their playground. Lack of intensity, no fightback, and an uninspired elimination.
Rouen, on the other hand, is concerning. Eliminated in the group stages for the second year in a row, France’s most decorated club once again exits the stage quietly and without flair. The weight of their trophy cabinet no longer fools anyone when results don’t follow. A reckoning seems inevitable.
Sénart, meanwhile, went down fighting. Narrowly beaten by Montpellier, the 2024 champions, the Templiers came close. But in sports, glory isn’t measured by how close you came to the goal. Elimination is still elimination. Frustrating, but real.

Montpellier, meanwhile, failed to raise their game. Where last year the Barracudas knew how to transcend themselves, this time they remained too cautious, unable to make the difference against better-prepared and hungrier opponents.
But while some giants stumbled, a breath of fresh air blew in from Béziers. The Pirates, in their first Challenge appearance, defied the odds and upset the hierarchy. A semifinal berth earned by simply knocking out the most iconic baseball club in France. An unexpected epic, a fairy-tale scenario: Béziers earns a true baptism by fire and a place in the sun in a competition where few expected them.
The contrast is striking: the giants wobble, the little one pushes. And perhaps that’s where the true charm of this 2025 Challenge lies.
An Organization Praised Unanimously

Beyond the sporting performance, the meticulous organization of the tournament in Metz left a lasting impression. Volunteers, officials, local officials: all were praised for their commitment. The image of the honor guard formed by volunteers to salute the Messin players as they left the field will remain etched in memory. President David Ten Eyck can be proud: on the field and behind the scenes, his leadership was exemplary.

Special mention also to the referees, scorers, technical managers, and—it’s time to think seriously about this—professionals in photography and video. Because if streaming has become the primary visibility vector for these competitions, the level must be raised. The broadcast, although sluggish at the start of the tournament, improved with the days. But to compete with European standards, priorities must be respected in order: solid network, educational commentary, effective framing.
Savigny Headed to Europe
Thanks to this victory, the Lions secure their ticket to the 2026 European Cup. And if Montpellier or Rouen shine in the 2025 edition in June, they could even pave the way for a new European cycle for Savigny. The Lions, finally, regain their pride and can aim higher.
