The Buccaneers of La Rochelle ready to set sail for a new season in Division 1
Having sailed in Division 1 since 2018, the Buccaneers of La Rochelle are preparing to set sail for their eighth consecutive season in the elite of French baseball. True to their ambitions, the Green and Yellows hope this time to secure a spot in the playoffs, or even reach the final four of the France Challenge, an objective that has so far eluded them.
A roster still focused on South America
For his second season in charge, manager Pablo Ossandon remains faithful to his playing philosophy. Hailing from South America, he relies on recruits from the same continent to strengthen his roster. Nieves, Molero, Tovar, and Peña thus come to complement the Rochelaise core and bring their experience.
On the pitching side, the club has successfully navigated the JFL (Locally Trained Players) transition. The duo of the Esteban twins, and especially Clément, helps to offset the prolonged absence of Nicolas Antoine, who has returned for a season in Germany. Another asset in the lineup: the powerful Canadian hitter Kyan Johnston, a sensation from the last France Challenge, who will once again be a threat at the plate for opponents.

A promising rotation and targeted recruitment
The technical staff is also banking on the progress of young French talents, notably Esteban Briones and Mateo Pierre. The latter, however, is expected to fly to the United States mid-season, which could reshuffle the deck. On the mound, Pablo Ossandon will rely on a trio of French players composed of Clément Esteban, Louis Perrois, and the promising Tom Hernoux to cover the seven innings reserved for JFL pitchers. The arrival of Kevin Canelon from Montpellier also constitutes a great opportunity to support the other two « aces » of the team, De La Rosa and Nieves.

Forrest Crawford, the team’s barometer
An undisputed pillar of the roster, Forrest Crawford comes off an exceptional defensive season, even if his offensive production was underwhelming. If his bat regains its power, he could play a key role in the Buccaneers’ success.
In addition to these key players, La Rochelle has strengthened its infield with three recruits: Tristan Laufenbuchler, a solid defender from Sénart, and the Japanese Yuki Kawashima, whose potential is yet to be discovered.
A rise in power hampered by the lack of a training school
While the roster on paper presents promising individualities, the main weakness of the Buccaneers remains the absence of a real baseball school. This lack of foundational training hampers the club’s rise, which must each year adapt and deal with departures.
It remains to be seen whether the collective will manage this season to create a real dynamic and maintain its level over time. One thing is certain: the Rochelais hope to repeat their excellent start to the 2024 season and, who knows, sail this time to the final stages.
