A powerhouse in 2023, the Montigny Cougars take stock. What can they build on for next season and how can they keep improving? We speak to their sports manager Jose de Araujo.
BTVF: For the entire club and all its teams, what’s the year’s verdict?
2023 was a solid season overall for the club. The various teams performed well in their respective leagues, especially the younger squads. Our 12U team claimed a double championship, winning both the Île-de-France and national titles. We also saw a stellar performance from our D1 team, reaching the finals in both the challenge and the league. They secured a thrilling victory in the challenge against Rouen but fell just short in a nail-biting fifth game against Montpellier in the league final.

BTVF: For the top tier, a challenge win and a league final surely make this a standout year?
More than a standout year, I see this as a benchmark season for Montigny’s top team. Reaching the final four in both the challenge and the league was among our season goals, and on that front, the team exceeded expectations. It wasn’t easy in either case, and we had to fight for it. Most importantly, this will serve as a foundation for future seasons to maintain this level of excellence.

BTVF: What’s your take on the JFL’s arrival?
We have mixed feelings about this federation rule. We don’t object to the principle—it’s crucial for locally trained players to compete at the highest level, and local development will only improve to help them get there. However, we take issue with the execution. The federation’s timeline is too ambitious for a first year, especially for pitchers. We’d have preferred a three-year goal to give clubs time to develop players. Additionally, training standards vary widely among clubs, even those currently in D1, and nothing is being done to address that.
BTVF: What are your thoughts on an eight-team division without pools?
We’re reverting to the pre-2019 format. This will create a more balanced league in terms of match quality and allow for a fairer comparison of team performances.

BTVF: On infrastructure or other projects, what have you accomplished this year?
We’re making progress on several key long-term projects for the club’s development and player training, in collaboration with the local municipality and the regional committee.
BTVF: What do you hope for in 2024?
To match 2023’s success and claim a European title.
