The French athlete continues to shine, securing an honorary title before the season’s end—a first for a French player. As her team just wrapped up the Sun Belt Conference regular season in NCAA Division 1 Softball, Mélissa Mayeux was named Player of the Year in the Sun Belt Conference.
This is the highest individual honor ever achieved by a French athlete in the North American university system. The international star batted .336 with 6 home runs and 29 RBIs, posting a .608 slugging percentage.
Second French player to reach Division 1 after Eloïse Tribolet, Mélissa became the first French player to win a match in the Division 1 Softball Championship—the NCAA playoffs—last year. Mélissa and three of her teammates were also named to the conference’s first team.
This year, the Louisiana University Lafayette Ragin’ Cajuns won the regular season and will aim to claim the Sun Belt Conference title, starting May 10, 2022, and advance past the Regional Tournament—the penultimate step to the College World Series. Their first match is Wednesday, May 11, against the winner of the ILM vs. Coastal Carolina game. Matches are available on ESPN+.
We hope to see her back in France in Montpellier from August 3 to 6 for the Women’s Baseball European Championship.
